Bungie's Destiny a 'shared-world' shooter

After a lot of secrecy, Bungie today officially announced Destiny , its first post-Halo project. A first-person shooter for Kronos Gold Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with portions of open-world sandbox and persistent world, Destiny is referred to as the world's first "shared-world shooter." And Activision has big wants it.
"Very few games transcend their medium and genre to genuinely become a component of popular culture; to belong within the time capsule as something which we can all share. And the world thinks Destiny could become some of those games," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said, describing its title because the "worst-kept secret from the history of secrets."
Bungie cofounder Jason Jones said Destiny is going to be the ultimate first-person shooter and in many cases something grander.
"If you like shooters, Destiny will probably be the best game you've ever played," Jones said. "Destiny is Bungie's next great shooter and is emerge an amazing marketplace that we're building. In Destiny, players be able to build their unique characters and grow them after some time. We're really putting players from the center of the globe and offering them control over their experience. From the beginning we've built mafia wars to be social and cooperative."
Bungie and Activision are certainly not yet talking release timing, but past legal documents said Destiny would ship first for Xbox 360 (along with the Xbox 720) later in 2010, having a 2014 release for PS3. Could Destiny go to PC or next-generation platforms? It's plausible, but Activision won't comment.

Though Destiny will come with a persistent world, the overall game will not have a monthly fee. Hirshberg confirmed the publisher has "no plans" to charge gamers a regular membership to play Destiny and wouldn't normally got into further detail about the experience's business design.
Destiny aims to get rid of molds by throwing out the traditional playbook, for example the idea of main menus, Jones said. In addition, Jones said everything that's fun to accomplish is more fulfilling if friends remain, which is why Destiny's campaign will never be a solitary experience.
"Think in regards to the gym, think of college; imagine those places empty. That could well be crazy; not a soul would like that; it will be creepy. But that's the ability we've all had for many years playing these campaign games in a very solitary way. That's not what we should want," he was quoted saying.
Playing solo is often a "totally valid" approach to experience Destiny, Jones said, though he argued it's more fun to try out with other people.
