Your call Senator.

The lower chamber approved by 50 out of 80 votes the interpretative project for the amnesty law. During the discussion, representative Carlos Gamou from CAP-L, said that his sector voted “strictly for reasons of party discipline” “ We’re comrades in the good and the bad” he pointed out, and added that the arguments from the sector were proposed in an internal discussion.

In part of the argument exposed before legislators, CAP L Representative Carlos Gamou pointed out that his sector was voting this project “strictly for reasons of party discipline”, following the mandate for the Frente Amplio.

“We presented our arguments to our comrades in an internal Frente Amplio discussion, but since we’re comrades in the good and bad, we’ve decided to follow those who are here, so we can follow this path” he said.

Nationalist representative, on his part, emphasized that they would “have to explain to the Uruguayan people why their opinion was asked for” since now it is not being recognized, and in this way the issue is going to the parliament “to erase what had already been decided by the people”.

Colorado legislator, Gustavo Cesrósimo said that the representatives of his party were “defending the rule of law, protecting principles and constitutional guarantees.”

Earlier, representing FA, Felipe Michelini had pointed out that they were not making claims from a place of arrogance, “they are expressions of our most profound reason, saying that this norm will collaborate in order to persecute those who are responsible”.

The speeches given by the opposition were mainly centered in the responsibility the legislators had of representing people’s will. Anal Lia Piñeryría, Nationalist representative pointed out that she had voted against the amnesty law, participating in the collection of signatures. She referred to one of the plebiscites and said “on that rainy April night the people stated their will and we have to obey that decision. Obviously we didn’t like the solution but I thought that my party should not be involved in the consequences of a pact in which it had not participated”.
